Overview of Private Pilot Flight Training Required Hours

  • Minimum of 40 hours of flight training
    • Within the 40 hours at least 20 hours consist of dual flight instruction with an authorized flight instructor
    • Also within the 40 hours at least 10 hours of solo flight time
  • Within the 20 hours of dual flight instruction time with a flight instructor
    • 3 hours of cross country dual flight training
    • 3 hours of night time dual flight training
      • Including 1 night cross country over 100NM dual instruction
      • Includes at least 10 take off and landings to a full stop while in the traffic pattern dual instruction
    • 3 hours of test prep with a flight instructor within the preceding 2 calendar months prior to taking your practical flight test
    • 3 hours of dual flight training on the control and maneuvering of an airplane solely by reference to flight instruments
    • 8 hours of remaining dual flight instruction with a flight instructor covering flight maneuvers, slow flight, stalls, unusual attitude recovery, takeoff and landings, steep turns to list a few.
  • 10 hours of solo flight time
    • Consisting of 5 hours of solo cross country time
      • Including 1 cross country flight of 150NM with full stop landings at 3 different airports
      • 3 takeoff and landings to a full stop at an airport with an operating control tower
      • 5 hours of solo flight time practicing maneuvers and take off and landings

  • Example of typical flight training costs based on aircraft rental rate of $140/hr. and flight instruction rate of $50/hr.
    • 40 hours of aircraft rental = $5600
    • 20 hours of dual flight instruction = $1000
    • Total cost based on minimum flight hours = $6600
  • Most students typically require 50-70 hours to complete their Private Pilot training
    • 50 hours of aircraft rental = $7,000 + $1000 dual = $8,000
    • 70 hours of aircraft rental = $9,800 + $1000 dual = $10,800
  • Flying 2 times per week for a total of 2 hours flight time with an instructor would be $380/week or when flying solo would be $280/week.  Based on minimal 40 hours needed would take 20 weeks to complete or about 5 months.
